I haven’t had any chance to write an authentication article till this morning, mainly because I have been extremely busy with my teaching job. Well, today I’ve been able to carve out some time to quickly show you how to identify the fake Air Jordan 9 Space Jam; IO usually refer to this shoe as the playoff 9s but Jordan brand keep changing the names of these shoes I guess to keep people interested. This is a highly coveted sneaker due to its rich history and its performance capability on the basketball court so counterfeiters aren’t going to spare it. I was able to come across a pretty neat comparison courtesy of Jacob Marcellus and here are the main things to look for to authenticate your own pair. Areas of my focus will include the toe, the back, the extension of the tongue, the insoles and packaging. So grab your pair and let’s get started.

How To Tell If Your 2026 Air Jordan 9 Space Jam Is Fake?
Toe Area
- Speckled Black Overlay: The authentic Air Jordan 9 Space Jam features clearly visible speckles throughout the black overlay. They are especially easy to spot in the areas highlighted by the yellow circles. On the fake pair, those speckles are either extremely faint or practically nonexistent.
- Shade of Black: The black overlay is also deeper and richer on the real pair. The fake has a more faded, charcoal-grey appearance, which makes the difference quite noticeable side by side. This deeper black is also consistent with descriptions of the 2026 retro.
- Toe Shape: The authentic pair has a sleeker, more streamlined toe profile, particularly where the black overlay meets the white outsole. The fake looks slightly bulkier and more rounded through this area. ( see yellow line)
Back Comparison
The rear of the shoes reveals several significant differences. Once again, the black material is noticeably deeper and richer on the authentic pair, while the counterfeit has a more faded, ashy-grey appearance. The speckled finish is also much more pronounced on the real pair( yellow boxes), with numerous small speckles clearly visible across the heel; they’re considerably less apparent on the fake.
The red detailing differs as well. The globe emblem on the authentic pair has a deeper, richer True Red appearance, whereas the fake’s emblem looks slightly lighter and more pinkish-red. Finally, the “23” embroidery is slightly larger and broader on the counterfeit, while the authentic numerals have a more compact appearance.
Front & Tongue Comparison
The differences continue around the tongue and white leather upper. The tongue extension on the fake air Jordan 9 Space Jam has a slightly yellowish or cream tint and appears noticeably narrower, ( see red boxes) while the authentic pair features a broader, cleaner white tongue extension. The white leather doesn’t match either. The real pair has a crisp, almost snow-white finish, whereas the counterfeit has a subtle off-white or warmer tone. When combined with the fake’s previously noted greyer black overlays, the counterfeit lacks some of the sharp black-and-white contrast seen on the authentic pair.
Front of the Insoles
- Overall color: The authentic insole is noticeably darker and richer black, while the fake looks lighter and more faded/charcoal.
- Length: Using the yellow reference lines, the authentic insole appears slightly shorter than the fake insole. Since you’re comparing the same stated size, that’s worth pointing out.
- Nike Air print: The white NIKE AIR branding looks brighter, denser, and more opaque on the authentic insole. On the fake, the white has a slightly duller appearance.
Back of the Insoles
Flip the insoles over and the differences become even more apparent. The DREAMCELL branding is larger, deeper and much easier to read on the counterfeit, whereas the embossing on the authentic insole is extremely subtle and can barely be seen. The materials also reflect light differently: the real insole has a slight satin/glossy finish, while the fake has a noticeably flatter, more matte appearance.
Packaging
Despite both pairs being the same stated size, the authentic box is noticeably wider and slightly taller, while the counterfeit box has a more compact profile. The space-inspired speckled pattern also differs; in this comparison, the white speckle highlighted on the authentic box is larger and more prominent than the corresponding detail on the fake. Finally, the NIKE AIR branding is slightly larger on the authentic box, whereas the logo on the counterfeit appears smaller and more condensed.
- Overall print quality: The authentic box has a sharper, more refined reproduction of the gym photograph. Fine background details such as the wall panels, equipment and edges of objects are better defined. The fake looks softer and slightly blurrier, almost as though the source image was reproduced at lower quality.
- Anniversary graphic: The large Jumpman/“30” graphic also appears cleaner and more precisely rendered on the authentic lid, while some of the fine lines lose definition on the fake.
- Writing: The fake lettering looks softer and less crisply defined.
- The clock: the authentic box displays the complete circular clock face. On the fake, part of the left/top-left portion of the clock is cropped out of the printed image which means that the counterfeit artwork has been cropped or positioned differently rather than simply suffering from lower print resolution.
Black-Light Test
The black-light test reveals another significant difference. When exposed to UV light, the vertical strip running down the center of the fake’s tongue fluoresces a very bright blue, while the same area on the authentic pair does not exhibit that blue glow.

- Insole Finish: The authentic foam has a slight satin/glossy appearance, while the fake has a flatter, more matte finish.
- Box Size: The authentic box is wider and slightly taller, while the fake box is more compact.
- Box Graphics: The authentic NIKE AIR branding is slightly larger, and differences can also be seen in the size and placement of the space-inspired speckles.
- Inside Box Artwork: The authentic Space Jam gym artwork is sharper and more detailed, with the commemorative writing appearing slightly clearer. The fake print looks softer and less refined.
- Clock Detail: One of the more interesting packaging tells is the gym clock. The entire circular clock is visible on the authentic artwork, while a portion of it is cropped out on the fake, indicating differently scaled or positioned artwork.
- Black-Light Test: Under UV light, the vertical center strip on the fake tongue fluoresces bright blue. The corresponding area on the authentic pair does not produce the same blue glow.
Overall: Some of the strongest differences in this comparison are the missing/faint speckles on the counterfeit, faded black overlays, bulkier toe, tongue-extension color and width, insole construction, box dimensions and artwork cropping, and the dramatically different UV reaction. As always, these details are most useful when considered together rather than relying on a single characteristic to authenticate a pair.
