At a time when all one sees on the news is evil and its derivatives, it is so refreshing to know that there are still many who delight in breathing life into their communities. Such is the work of Kevin Shiver, the owner of Frederick Bikes For Love. Before I tell you how Kevin is serving his community, let me tell you how I found out about Frederick Bikes For Love. We have four bikes in our household and prior to meeting Kevin, only two of them were working properly. My bike had a malfunctioning pedal and subpar brakes; I tried taking it to a bike shop to get it fixed and they wanted to charge me an arm and a leg for the repairs. Because I didn’t have the necessary funds for the repair, I ended up storing the bike back in my garage. That was about four or five months ago. The only exercise I was getting was my morning walk and the pick up basketball games at the YMCA. About three weeks ago, I received a phone call from my wife with some exciting news, and I quote
I found someone that will fix our bikes for free
And ladies and gentlemen, this is how I was introduced to Kevin Shiver, who ended up fixing both our non- working bikes overnight. I wanted to find out more about the inspiration behind his non- profit organization and here is my exchange with him.
Housakicks- Would you please introduce yourself to our readers
Kevin-My name is Kevin, I’m 32 years old and I’m a jack of all trades and master of none. I’m kind, caring, compassionate, motivated, hard-working , outgoing, honest, loyal, driven down-to-earth, and easy to get along with.
Housakicks-How did you learn how to fix bikes?
Kevin-I got started working on bikes when I was six or seven years old. We didn’t have a whole lot of money to buy new ones so I used to go around dumpsters and pull the old ones people would throw away and piece them together. Then I started building motorbikes that I would sell to pay my bills. I was left with tons of extra parts and instead of wasting or throwing them away, I gave them to those who couldn’t afford it.
Housakicks-When did you decide to fix people’s bikes for free and what was the inspiration behind Frederick Bikes For Love ( FBFL)?Kevin-I’ve been doing this for a little over a month now. Kids in my neighborhood were constantly bringing any of their broken bikes to me for repair. When I saw the joy, smiles and laughs on their faces once their bikes were restored and watched them ride around happily, it made me realize how I could serve my community. And this is how FBFL was birthed.Housakicks-What vision or future goals do you have for FBFL?Kevin-My future goal is to one day have a bigger location other than my home where people from Frederick County could get their broken bikes fixed/repaired at no cost. It would help to get bikes in and out faster. I eventually want to be able to expand FBFL in all of Maryland and possibly Nationwide.Housakicks- It was good conversing with you, is there anything else you’d like to addKevin-For as long as I can remember I thought I was serving and giving back to my community by doing the normal everyday life activities i.e. paying bills, taxes going to work, etc.. But I realized that the only way to truly give back is through selfless acts of kindness. For me, that lane is fixing bikes for people at no cost
I also wanted to share some of the wonderful stories that have happened as a result of Kevin’s work.
I would also strongly encourage you to support Kevin in this endeavor, to do please visit his gofundme page, CLICK HERE
