The release of a new Nike sneaker is always a highly anticipated event, but the recent release of the Kobe Bryant memorial edition was especially emotional. Nike honored the late basketball legend and his daughter Gigi with the Kobe Mambacita 16, and replica companies were quick to produce counterfeit versions of the shoe. But they didn’t stop there – seeing the recent success of Nike’s SB Dunk silhouette, they created an iteration in honor of Kobe. It’s a shark mentality, always looking for opportunities to capitalize. In many ways, bootleggers are like wolves. They’re constantly on the prowl for opportunities to capitalize on, and they’re especially attracted to high-profile releases. As much as I despise what they are doing, I couldn’t help but appreciate the Kobe inspired SB Dunk they created.
What Inspired The Nike SB Dunk Kobe?
When Nike released the Kobe MPLS jersey colors in honor of the late basketball star, they had no idea that it would inspire bootleggers. The shoe features both kobe numbers 8 and 24 on the heels, a tribute to the iconic jersey. It is built with smooth nubuck leather overlays and underlays, and a yellow Nike swoosh logo graces both panels. It also includes a few perks like a gold Kobe hang tag and comes in a box with a graphic of Kobe on it.
I won’t be surprised if this was a Nike project that was prematurely leaked by these bootleggers. If not, it would be great if the brand would actually take some cues from this prototype and create it for Kobe fans. It certainly would be coveted. The design is consistent with the edit to amplify campaign .This shoe would be a great memorial to one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
