Nike is no stranger to releasing retro versions of their classic basketball shoes. For years, basketball fans and sneakerheads have been treated to re-issues of many different models from throughout the decades. Now, the brand has decided to bring back one of their more iconic shoes from the 2000’s—the Nike KD 3 All Star.
This isn’t just another retro shoe release from Nike; rather, it carries with it a rich history that adds to its value as a collector’s item or as an everyday pair of kicks. Back in 2011, Kevin Durant first debuted his third signature silhouette during his 4th season with the Oklahoma City Thunder—a season that saw him obliterate NBA defenses and make his second All-Star Game appearance. To commemorate this feat, Nike released the KD 3 “All Star” colorway.
Design and Colorway
The 2023 Nike KD 3 All Star Retro comes in its OG colorway of Challenge Red, White, and Black. Its uppers feature a combination of synthetic leather and mesh. Flywire details appear on the metallic overlay for extra support and stability. The signature Nike Swoosh gets dressed in white and outlined with black for an eye-catching contrast against the bold red base layer. Red laces complete the design while a semi-translucent red midsole houses the concealed Zoom Air unit below it.
Performance
Materials & Fit
The shoe comes in an impressive blend of shiny and regular synthetic leather and Flywires. As far as the fit is concerned, they are true to size, so there is no need to go up or down a size.
Comfort
I was watching weartesters’ breakdown of the shoe, and he claimed that the shoe was indeed extremely comfortable and gave credit to the way the phylon midsole felt under his feet.
Traction
Standard herringbone treads with clean lines on the outrigger. Overall, the traction is excellent, although according to Weartesters, the clear lines on the outrigger should have been swapped out with herringbone treads because they do tend to cause some sliding. The shoe has a terrific grip on clean floors but can be a little slick on dusty ones.
Cushioning
Although it says in the description on Nike’s website that the shoe has full-length zoom units, this is untrue. Only the forefoot has the zoom unit. However, the entire shoe features a phylon midsole, and Weartesters claim that comfort is out of this world, so cushioning is a win.
In his video review, Weartesters said that the 2023 version of the KD 3 All star is much better than the OG pair, be sure to watch the video in its entirety as he brings up some key points that I may have missed.

KD 3 All Star Retro: Resale Value

The chart above gives us a breakdown of the average sale price of the shoe since January 27,2023. The findings are quite interesting, the initial $250 mark saw a swift dip to $156 on January 31st, only for it to leap up to $258 two days later. This was followed by yet another significant drop down to $153. On February 4th, however, we observe an impressive surge back up to $212 – though this was short-lived, as it rapidly descended back to $168 before gradually and steadily rising once more; at the time of writing, its price is averaging at around $226. We definitely need to see our five number summary for further details.
Minimum: $129
Quartile Q1: $152.25
Median: $195
Quartile Q3: $212
Maximum: $551
The lowest sale recorded was $129, for a size 9 while the highest was $551 for a size 14, recorded on February 2. 25% of the shoes sold for prices between $129 and $152 ( see next chart for sizes). 50% sold for prices between $152 and $212 and another 25% sold for prices from $212 to $551. there were three outliers recorded: $397, $399, $551. They correspond to sizes 15,13 and 14 respectively. With the outliers removed from our data, the overall average resale value is $188 with a 19% volatility ( that’s a high volatility). Let’s see the current earnings by size sold.

Sizes 8 through 9.5 led to returns between $10 and $30, while sizes 10-13 led to profit margins between $50 and $65. Sizes 14 and 15 led homeruns $353 and $223 respectively. But for both of these sizes , only a single sale was recorded, so we can’t be too sure since the sample size is small.
Is the KD3 All Star worth reselling?
Without a doubt, yes – but with some caveats. Given the high volatility of the market, prices can turn around quickly and unexpectedly; so, it is important to be aware of this and exercise caution when investing. With that in mind, I highly recommend aiming for sizes 10.5, 11, 13, 14 and 15 when reselling shoes – these sizes tend to yield mark-ups above average.
