I’ve been saying the same thing about every basketball signature shoe Nike has put on the market as of late. If you’ve been paying attention at all, you’ll notice that Paul George Nike PG2, Westbrook’s Air Jordan 1 Why Not zero.1 and the latest Nike Zoom Kobe 1 Protro were engineered with the three athletes totally involved in the process. Nike’s main goal has always been and will always be performance. Although basketball shoes ‘sales have stalled , I think 2018 will paint a new picture as Nike is figuring out ways to connect with the consumer on a more intimate level. The brand is now the official supplier of the NBA on court apparel and has recently introduced the Nike NBA Connected Jersey equipped with an app that allows the consumer to get next-level access to athletes and exclusive offers. So this is the perfect time for Nike to tap back into basketball and every shoe that has recently surfaced has been loaded with great narratives from the athletes themselves.
The Nike Zoom Kobe 1 Protro is an upgraded version of the original Zoom kobe 1, the same shoe Kobe was wearing when he annihilated the Raptors and dropped 81 points on them. Interestingly enough the first player to test the Zoom Kobe 1 Protro is the new mid-range king, Demar Derozan, the Raptor’s most lethal player. Derozan’s game is definitely similar to Kobe’s; he is one of the only guys left in the league that still operates in the high-post area. Nike ought to use the same strategy they are currently using on the Lebron 15 PE to promote the Zoom kobe 1 Protro. Basically release various colorways of the shoes randomly every time Demar Derozan is playing a game.
As indicated in the title of the post, these were built primarily for performance with Kobe Bryant’s own instructions. He wanted to make sure performance was the fundamental backdrop. Here is what he said about it via Nike
I wanted to build a business that wasn’t just based on things I have done in the past. It is important that the brand stands for performance and that everything we do is innovative, even if we are releasing shoes from the past they still must be built on performance.
The Nike Zoom Kobe 1 Protro has the identical silhouette as the OG zoom kobe 1 but has been upgraded with 2018 technology. One of the upgrade involved reducing the weight of the shoes by cutting out elements of the OG zoom kobe 1 that were bothersome. The NBA has evolved and more teams have adopted a faster pace which requires players to run even more. Even big men are required to play like guards so cushioning had to be improved. The Kobe 1 Protro will feature a Zoom bag setup with a rocker and ride that is smoother than the original. The designers also improved the ride by eliminating foam and decreasing the size of the carbon fiber shank to create a more engineered feel.
