The Concepts X Asics Gel Lyte III OG Otoro is set to officially release today and retails for $150. In their latest partnership with Asics, Concepts is putting historical context to today’s excessive luxury culture. The shoe and its companion collection, which are part of Concepts’ 25th anniversary collaborative series, are inspired by Japanese tuna and restaurant culture curators.
Similarly to New England lobster, Japanese tuna has gone from being an afterthought to a delicacy over the years. However, preferences changed in the 1970s, and the Bluefin became one of the most sought-after fish on the planet. As demand for tuna and Otoro surged, prices at Tokyo’s famed fish markets surged. By 2019, it had skyrocketed — the “Tuna King,” Kiyoshi Kimura, set a new record when he paid $3.1 for a specimen. Of course, the prices at the fish market auctions are passed on to the diners.
The appeal of the Tuna’s extra-fatty belly, known as “Otoro,” makes it a must-have for those who can afford it at the sushi bar. The rich color of “Otoro,” which has become synonymous with luxury, is duplicated across the new Gel Lyte 3 by using pigskin suede in a gorgeous range of pink colors. 3M strikes to the shoe and customary accoutrements are references to sushi utensils, particularly the spectacular knives.
